Recovery drinks

Hi all, I'm curious whether anybody here uses the BB Results and Recovery Formula, or some other recovery drink, and how you use it. Specifically, I am wondering whether it's necessary to use one during Recovery Week, because you're not working at 85%-100% of your max and therefore not depleting your glycogen. (Sean, I'm thinking that right now, you're the only one who's gone through recovery week...?)

I use a homemade recovery drink based on BB's 4:1 carb-to-protein ratio that also replenishes electrolytes. I researched this quite a bit and came up with the recipe below. I drink about 10 oz. after each workout during month 1 (although not on Cardio Recovery day, for the reason I stated above). Until I started doing this, I was half-asleep by 3 p.m.! would love to hear other people's experiences with this. Thanks!

Makes about 1 quart. Shake all the following up in a sport bottle.

    1/4 cup 100% fruit juice
    4 TBSP sugar
    1/4 tsp sea salt
1/2 scoop vanilla whey protein powder
    3 3/4 cups water

    Each 8 ounces provides 65 calories, 12.5 g carbohydrate, 116.9 g sodium, 32.1 mg potassium, 3 g protein.

I did not use a recovery drink during Month 1 or the Recovery week. I bought the BB recovery drink in preparation for month 2. 2 scoops has 220 calories. There is no way I'm working out this hard to drink 220 calories in 12 oz. I would like to lose weight. But there is also no way I can make it through the Month 2 workouts without a little of this stuff in my water. So I'm using 1 scoop in a large water glass to help get through the workout and following the workout as I am working out first thing in the morning. It helps me push through.

I did not feel like I needed anything extra unless I was working out for an hour or more.

I have also heard that chocolate milk has the right proportions of protein/carbs and makes a great recovery drink.

I guess I never really embraced the concept of a recovery drink, but I probably should. I always drink a mix of half Gatorade, half water during my workouts. I do like the idea of adding some protein right afterward as that would make sense to replenish the muscles. And that chocolate milk (or soy milk) sounds like a good idea!

Sara, I think I will try your recipe out this week and make some, thanks for sharing here.

I use NO2 super blast, and one scoop has only 60 calories. They recomend using two scoops, but I'm good with the one. Bodybuilders use this too, and I think it's pretty good stuff :)

that's funny sean, i do the same thing. i buy the 8-pack of low-calorie gatorade, pour half into an empty bottle, then fill both bottles the rest of the way up with water. i -have- been considering trying the results and recovery formula or some other recovery drink though.

i'm smiling because i love it

If I use a recovery drink, which I don't always, I use 1 - 2 tbsps 100% cranberry juice mixed with a pack of powdered vitamin drink (kind of like Emergency-C) diluted with roughly 8oz of water. The other day I added a little salt to it to get my sodium up.

I've always been a simply water person but when I started training for my 1/2 marathon I rethought that and now starting Insanity I'm drinking it more often.

Beach Body says that adding protein to your recovery drink in a very small amount (4:1 simple carbs to protein) increases the recovery effect by several hundred percent. (FYI)

I found that eating right afterward only made me sluggish... I didn't get my energy back until I started using a recovery drink. I'm a believer now -- on the other hand, I think you only need one if you're working out to this extreme.

Chocolate milk is a good choice I learned in my nutrition classes, and it tastes yummy. I forgot about that one :)
