Day 51 – Max Nothing Circuit
Well, I guess it was bound to happen.
It did.
I missed a workout.
I suppose a 50 day streak is pretty good, but I was really hoping to push the entire way through. I know it’s not the end of the world, but it’s hard to accept missing a workout. Plus I have to reveal it here publicly to all of my readers! I know you guys, and I know you will be supportive
The reason for missing the workout was two-fold. The first and real reason was that I had a choice to go to our kids first soccer practice and meet the coach, or stay at home and exercise. For my son, this was his first time. He is supposed to be <ahem> 4 to play (although he isn’t “officially” 4 until June). He even told me before we left “Dad, I am going to do great!”. And of course he did! So, I wasn’t going to miss being there for my kids. There are some things that are even more important that Insanity! By the time we got home and ate dinner it was 7:30pm. This meant I couldn’t think of starting until after 9:00pm or so.
The second reason is that I think my knees are getting a tad worse. It is not to the point where they are in constant pain, but I am noticing more and more how tender they are and how I am favoring them, especially my left. Things like getting up off the floor, and climbing stairs, and even getting out of chairs has me noticing the tenderness. I really don’t want to make them worse, so an extra rest day may not be a bad thing. I did notice them hurting a bit during the workout yesterday too. It seems like a good percentage of people develop some sort of knee pain during Insanity judging by all of the people in the forums. It is a strenuous program for sure and I suppose we really really need to make sure our form is perfect on some of these exercises.
So, those are the reasons that I missed the workout today. I plan on jumping right back in tomorrow and pick up with the scheduled workout. I am so close now that I have to finish strong!

Sean, Great job on a 50 day streak! That is pretty impressive considering how intense this program is. Also, I really enjoy hearing how real people, with jobs and families and other commitments, deal with these minor setbacks in their excercise programs. I bet your family is really proud of you!
Hey, I’m really proud of my Fit Test 4 results. I feel like I have really improved in the last two weeks. Those hr long workouts have really paid off!
hey, no worries about missing out… you’ll jump right back into it (literally)…
for your knees, you may want to pay attention to how hard your landings are when you are jumping around. Try to land “soft” (if that makes sense). I played soccer in college and did A LOT of plyos and they stressed this quite a bit. The softer you land, the less stress/impact on the knees and then the less likely they will get injured.
just a thought.
It sounds like what you need. Love that Max Nothing Circuit! Referring back to the guy on YouTube who held “make-up” days after 63 — maybe you can just tack them on at the end. He said something that made a lot of sense: “I have the rest of my life to get fit; it doesn’t all have to happen in 63 days.” So true. And family first! Then knees.
Oh, Sean, do consider those Ace knee wraps with the open patella. They prevent further damage. I’ve had great luck so far. Over time they could make it worse by destabilizing, but we’re just trying to get through 60 days without long-lasting damage. I think without them, I would have had to quit at day 29.
Thanks guys for the encouragement!
Justin, I am very conscious of my landings, thanks though for pointing that out everyone reading should take that advice.
Sara, I will look into one of those knee braces if it persists, but I would hate to have to wear one. For now it is more irritating than painful so we’ll see.
Sons’ soccer was a must! That’s what a great dad will do.
You have been so loyal to this workout, that a day missed will not hurt you. Worse knees on the other hand will hurt you. Maybe you can contact Shaun T through his facebook page. He’s real good about getting back to his fans.
Hope you heal fast!
I, too, struggle with balancing workouts with family obligations. I think you totally made the right choice. You can’t get that back.
And in the scheme of things it’s better to be fit overall and missing one day out of 63 isn’t the end of the world. An extra rest day can even be beneficial to recovery, especially if you’re experiencing knee pain. Go an extra day, make it 64!
You rock!!
It’s nice to see others with families here! I believe you need a lot of support from your family to make it through these workouts, and that I have.
Family always comes first in my book.
