Day 59 – A Confession And A Modification
Ok guys, normally I am all sunshine and flowers about Insanity, but today I have a confession to make. I need to be honest here . . . I AM READY FOR THIS TO BE DONE! Don’t get me wrong, I really do love the Insanity workout and am extremely proud of myself (and all of you who are doing it with me) it is just that I feel like I need a break. I have really only felt this way here in the last week. It is mentally and physically wearing on me. There are a couple of main reasons for this:
- Physically, my knees need rest. Coming into today’s workout my knee issue turned into knees issues. My right knee was hurting all day as well as the normal left knee. It was probably the worst they have felt the entire time. These knees have been through a lot and deserve a break. I was dreading starting today because I was afraid of how they would do. The rest of my body feels good with a little muscle soreness here and there (which I kind of like).
- The second reason is more compelling: there are times when I feel like my life revolves around Insanity! I find myself rescheduling items so I can get in a workout. Or sacrificing other important tasks or time with the family to do a workout. Now I understand that you have to be committed to this, which I am, it has just been tough juggling being a good dad, husband, and getting these workouts done without stress. I am looking forward to coming home from work one day next week and just playing with the kids for an hour instead of huffing and puffing in front of a TV. This part of Insanity is much tougher for me than the physical part.
The second reason brings me to the “Modification” part of this post. Here is an example of the choice I had to make today. I had volunteered to move some items around at my daughter’s school in preparation for the annual auction. I was slated to show up at 6:00pm and it would only take a half hour. Well, by the time I get home from work and get prepped and ready to do my workout it is 5:00pm. Today I was scheduled to do Max Interval Circuit which is a full hour long. So I had some choices:
- Skip the workout
- Do the workout in the evening, which probably wouldn’t get started until 8:30pm or so and mess up my dinner/eating schedule
- Do a shorter workout
I chose #3. Instead of Max Cardio Circuit I did the Month 1 Plyometric Cardio Circuit which is 40 minutes long vs. 60 minutes. This allowed me to get over to the school in time and enjoy dinner with the family. It was the modification for today that I had to do.
Knowing that I am so close to the finish line is keeping me motivated though. I only have 3 more workouts and one fit test to go!

A lot of people would have just said “screw it”… props for doing a shorter workout and still being there for your daughter’s school.
well played.
Thanks Joe! I still got in a good workout for sure and some things are just more important.
show ur end results!!!
Way to go Sean. I like to see people find a way to make it work. After all, we do have lives outside Insanity. And you did something about it. Like I said before, your family has to be so proud of you for your “stick-to-it-ness”.
Insanity is wearing on me too. I’m just so excited that this is my last week. Actually I’m already dreading my last fit test. I really pushed it on the last one (probably too hard) and am not looking forward to it even though it is the end of the program. Hopefully I will surprise myself.
Thanks srg! I think you are the only one who is right on my schedule so you know what I am talking about.
As for the last fit test, I am sort of looking forward to it. It’s time to hold nothing back and go for it! Good luck on your final week too.
Hey Sean,
I too am amazed you didn’t just scrap it. You know that 99.9% of people would have on a day like that, so you are committed indeed (to “only” do Plyo Cardio Circuit — haha!) I think we all know what you mean about one more thing you “have to” do. I’m already finding myself interested in other types of workouts and I’m only on day 45!
So here’s the important question. How did Plyo Cardio Circuit feel now? Easy? Fast?
I really thought it would be easy considering the workouts of Month 2, but it was still hard! The good thing though is it did fly by. Only 2 circuits? Pshaw!
Your postings have been very helpful and truthful. I appreciate your honesty. I just received my insanity packet and I will begin Monday. Your postings are the reason I decided to make this investment. I was tired of seeing reviews that were vague and sounded the same.
I have read all the postings you have made from Day 1 and it is good to see you completing the task.
You have prepared me for the workout mentally. I was not really nervous but concerned about the workout and the information I received from you was very valuable.
Kevin, thank you so much for the compliment. I am glad you are doing Insanity with us. Please drop in the forum and introduce yourself and you will get tons of support. Keep us updated as to when you start!
You don’t need to beat yourself up over this. You have been doing great this whole entire time. You are human and you made a very good choice I believe. 60 days is a long time, and so many would have given up the first month. Family is the most important thing for you, and I think that is awesome! You didn’t give up, you just modified. Nothing is set in stone, and you are so close to being done and getting that much needed rest. This is the time to dig deep like you’ve never done befor. You can do it!!!!
Thank you Colette, it has been great to hear your support and follow your progress as well! I WILL dig deeper!
I am waiting for my DVDs so that I can start Insanity because of reading this blog. I want to stay with it for the entire 30 days. That is an accomplishment in itself – by yourself, DVDs over and over.
I just read today that I needed to be in good physical condition to do it. I am not, but I am going forward anyway. That is the way that I started my boot camp – I got in and did the best that I could. I may not have done as many reps or finished the circuit behind eveyone else, but I would get it done. I like that type of challenge. The major challenge will be doing by myself with no encouragement but my own. Yikes!
If you have done a boot camp before, then you will be fine. The first few days is very tough, no matter what shape you are in. If you need support, please come by the forum and introduce yourself! We are a growing community of very supportive folks
I struggle with balancing the workouts with my other work and family obligations as well. At times I feel like I’m obsessed with this. I love to hear about how someone as committed as you are to the program has to modify. The reality is that one day isn’t going to ruin all of the hard work you’ve put in. This is more than just 63 days, it’s a lifetime of fitness. Your compromise was perfect. I’m impressed and salute you!
As an aside, have you read any comments from people out there who fit in 2 workouts a day? A P90X, Insanity and somtimes a run or spin class? How in the world do they have time? Let alone the energy? Is that healthy?? They must not have kids and/or full time jobs.
I think you hit it on the head Jenn, I have too become ‘obsessed’ with this workout. I am the kind of person that always like to finish what I start, so nothing is going to stop me. It has been a tough ride, but VERY rewarding.
i really wouldn’t sweat it sean. last week i had to make my own “modification” to my workout. thanks to daylight saving’s time and an hour of overtime on top of the time change, i wasn’t able to start my workout until 3:30am. at least you did one of the month one workouts, whereas i took the easy way out and did core cardio and balance. the important thing isn’t WHICH workout you did, it’s that you DID a workout.
Cas, you are the man. Anyone who workouts at 3:30am is more dedicated than anyone I know. And I’ve seen your results and they are awesome. Keep up the great work!
